ISLAND whistler Donald Maclean has been honoured for his dedicated and accomplished work as the man in the middle in Western Isles football matches with a top national award.

His 20-years plus service to refereeing at the sharp end of the beautiful game on Lewis and Harris has earned Donald the prestigious award for Contribution To Refereeing from the North of Scotland Referee’s Association.

Association President Billy Baxter made the presentation to Donald in Lewis on Thursday and thanked the whistler for his sterling efforts.

Donald himself admits he was shocked to both be nominated and presented with such a prestigious honour.

He said: “I was very surprised when I was told and it was something I didn’t expect.

“I’ve been reffing in Lewis and Harris for more than 20-years now but I still have the love for it.”
