Lewis shinty gears up for new season

CAMANACHD Leòdhais have an attractive set of pre-season friendlies in place before the shinty season proper throws-up at the start of March.

aFor the first time ever the club will be hosting opposing teams.

First up will be the visit of Skye Camanachd on January 28th. Skye are currently a club in transition with their young second team hoping to improve on a few disappointing seasons. However, they have reigned supreme at Under 14 and Under 17 level for the last couple of seasons and these young talented players should flourish under the watchful eye of newly appointed coach, Murdo ‘Odrum’ Morrison from Portree, who also attended the Nicolson Institute.

Those players who represent the club but are away from home for work or university have a fixture organised on February 4 against Glasgow University, which will be played at Yoker.

The jewel in the crown of the upcoming fixtures will be the visit of the Camanachd Cup Winners and Premier Division Champions, Newtonmore, to Shawbost on February 18th.

The Badenoch side will be taking a strong squad as well as the four trophies the club won last year.

The club plans to have an open day, with coaching for all the young people on the island as well as stalls for parents and supporters before the biggest challenge match the club has ever had.

Before the league commences on March 3, there should also be the annual Cuach a’ Chuain Sgìth fixture against Lochbroom to be played at Inverlael.
