western Isles resident Martin Flett recently returned from Luxembourg with 5th place in the European Masters Bench Press Championships, held in Hamm, Luxembourg.
Martin opened with 195 kilos but failed his lift, before getting it easily at his second attempt.
His third attempt at 202.5 would have put him in bronze medal position, but he narrowly failed to lock out the attempt after back stage confusion had left him with just over 20 seconds to start his lift.
The 202.5 was also an attempt at the British Masters 2 (over 50) bench press record. His 195 left him just outside the medals in 4th equal place, but he was classed as 5th because he had a slightly heavier bodyweight than the lifter he was equal with.
“5th place probably doesn’t sound too impressive,” said Martin, “but last year in France I lifted 180 and came back with a silver medal. This year I lift 15 Kg more and come home empty handed. That’s the nature of the sport.”
Martin’s 195 Kg lift was also his best ever performance in an international championship event, eclipsing the 192.5 he lifted in Bratislava in 2008.
