Point powerlifter Thomas Parkes broke the Scottish bench press record for his age and weight at the North Midlands powerlifting championships.
The 21 year old from Point has been been powerlifting non-competitIively for a two years. Earlier this month, Thomas attended the his first competitive powerlifting event, the North Midlands Powerlifting Championship in Scunthorpe.
He was competeing in the under 23 age category and the under 120kg weight class. The competition consisted of three raw (unequipped) lifts, bench press, deadlift and squat. The person who lifts the highest total weight wins. Thomas won his category on the day and his raw bench press of 145kg broke the current Scottish bench press record for his age and weight. Thomas has qualified for the British finals in July. Since then, he has competed in the Scottish Open Championships. This competition took the same format as the previous one. Thomas won his section on the day and won the Scottish under 23 title. Thomas has two further competitions in July, the British Bench press finals and the British three lift finals. Last week Thomas received a letter from the Scottish Commonwealth powerlifting team and has been selected for their squad and will be representing Scotland in competition for the first time in October this year.
