THE Rovers have returned to Lewis football with Lewis Rovers winning the Welfare League Winter Cup in emphatic fashion.
This time it’s in the Welfare League where a team using the same name as the former senior league stars are impressing onlookers.
Ex-Point and Lewis and Harris Select star Donald ‘Tuff’ Macdonald rolled back the years to net a double for the rampant Rovers for whom Preston also notched a double.
Nathan Harris scored the only goal of the game for a Butchers side who couldn’t live with Rovers’ hard running and quick breaks.
The Butchers had reached the final courtesy of a stunner from Murdo ‘Mojo’ Maclean which gunned down Albion at the semi-final stage.
In the other semi-final Rovers had toppled much fancied Tolsta 5-1 in a one-sided encounter.
Scott Keose, Scott Duncan (2), Mark ‘Popo’ Macleod and Preston were the scorers for Rovers who have hit top form at just the right time ahead of the grass season starting this coming Monday night.
Alex ‘Chicken’ Maciver netted for Tolsta on the night but it wasn’t enough to derail Rovers who ran amok and went on to win the cup.
Meanwhile the grass season is due to start on Monday, May 7, with all ten teams scheduled to be in action in the first week.
The initial round of fixtures are as follows: Albion vs Rangers Club (Shawbost Pitch); Butchers vs Tolsta (Lochs Pitch); Lewis Rovers vs Sea Angling (Smith Avenue); Hotel Hebrides vs Stornoway (Harris Pitch); Caber vs Island United (Smith Avenue Pitch).
