At the Bridge Club on Tuesday 25th November it was the Tom Grassie Trophy competition.
There were 4 ½ tables so it was a 27 board movement. Interestingly there weren’t as many games as usual on offer so the ‘och’ bidders would have come unstuck Tuesday. There were 4 slams available on boards 6, 11, 20 and 27 but only one pair bid and made a slam so congratulations to Jenny Morrison and Gerda Graauwmans whose 6S on board 27 (6NT is also makeable) gave them a top. Irene MacKenzie and Harris MacKenzie dipped their toes in the water on board 13 but it was unlucky for them as their 6H contract went one off. Still, they made up for it and had a magnificent bid on board 12 finding and making an impossible 3NT.
Colin Scott and Bryan Harris missed out on board 21. A contract of 3NT was a certainty but they failed to bid beyond 1H. Murdo Kennedy excelled on that board and made 2 overtricks giving him and Norah MacDonald a top.
In third place this week were Jenny and Gerda. They nipped ahead of Stewart MacDonald and NL MacDonald on virtually the last hand and took 3rd spot with 57%
In second place were Rita MacDonald and Janet Smith with 59%. They had a steady evening with 4 tops but 3 not-so-good hands against Norah and Murdo.
In first place with a great score of 65% were Ken MacDonald and Dave Gormley. Dave has now overtaken Stewart as the player of the season (so far). Well done Dave.
Finally, the Club would like to say a fond farewell to one of its members, John Drummond, from Ness. John died after a short illness and will be missed by all of us at the Club, especially the ‘Thursday’ group where he was a regular with his playing partner John Murdo MacLean. We have great memories of our visit to Ness in March this year for the Angus Morrison Shield Competition which John helped Iain Gordon MacDonald to arrange. We send our sympathy and best wishes to John’s family.
