The George Kerr Junior Judo Club will be running a four week summer school for Stornoway’s 4-15 year olds, following the overwhelming success of the martial arts club which was launched with the backing of The Scottish Salmon Company in February.

The Club has over 75 members and Dr George Kerr and his team regularly take their message of good exercise and a healthy diet to more than 200 children who attend the local primary schools. According the George the response has been fantastic prompting the creation of the new summer school.

Starting on Thursday 7th July and running on Thursday 14th July, Thursday 4th August and Thursday 11th August, the programme costs just £10. Anyone interested should go to the Sandwick Community Hall on 7th July. The class for under-8s starts at 10am and the class for older children starts at 11am.

The programme, including the free hire of Judo suits, has been made possible through the continuing sponsorship of The Scottish Salmon Company, which employs over 300 people across the Hebrides and the West Coast of Scotland.

Dr George Kerr, who received his CBE from HRH The Queen at the Palace of Holyroodhouse on 5th July, said:

“Everyone in Stornoway has been very welcoming and very enthusiastic. I love coming here especially when even the people at the airport want to talk Judo as soon as I arrive!

“We’ve had tremendous feedback from the community and thanks to The Scottish Salmon Company we are delighted to be able to put on the summer school. It will keep all the kids interested and active during the summer months.

“The Club will start up again in late August and we’re hoping we will be able to include more kids next term.”

Dr George Kerr is a former British and European champion and has been teaching kids Judo for over four decades. He is one of only a handful of living people in the world today to hold a tenth Dan in Judo. As well as receiving his CBE in this year’s New Year Honours List, George was also awarded the Order of the Rising Star by the Japanese government in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the promotion of judo earlier this year.

The Scottish Salmon Company was named Best Marine Aquaculture Company 2011 at the Scottish Marine Aquaculture Awards, sponsored by the Crown Estates.
