Stornoway United won the under-16 Lews Castle College Cup with a hard fought win over Western Thistle this week.
The two junior sides clashed in a cup final cracker at Goathill Park where just a single goal split the two sides.
A Hugh Morrison penalty, just three minutes from time, tipped the scales in the Stornoway side’s balance despite the fact they had been earlier reduced to ten men.
United were the favourites going into the final but Western Thistle soon showed that they were not there to make up the numbers.
In a tight game, both teams created chances but a combination of slack finishing and good goalkeeping meant that neither side could get the vital opening goal and the longer the match went the more it seemed that one goal would be enough.
The large crowd had been entertained with a good contest and among many fine individual performances the sponsor’s man of the match award went to United’s Denis Macdonald.
