The Lewis and Harris Sub Aqua Club have just received a certificate from the national diving body, the British Sub Aqua Club (BSAC) to celebrate the achievement of 20 years as a BSAC branch. The club are delighted with this achievement and are looking forward to many more years of diving around the Western Isles.
The diving club have been especially busy over the last year, with diving trips to the Shiants, Uig, Carloway, Broadbay and many dives around Stornoway. The diving was particularly fantastic last summer, when the waters were in some cases extremely clear and there was a huge amount of marine life to see.
Highlights from the last year’s diving include diving with seals and basking sharks on the Westside, seeing some squid and a conger eel near Stornoway, diving with huge lobsters in Broadbay and many more. Diving has been a bit slower over the winter with the cold weather, however we have still managed a few excellent, if shorter, dives over the last few months. We are looking forward to another good season of summer dives though.
The club has its own rigid inflatable boat and trailer that allows us to quickly get to dive sites around the Islands. Many readers may have seen us launching at Cuddy Point, nice and early on a Saturday morning.
The club has also been quite busy with training over the last year, we have now trained up five new nationally qualified dive instructors with help from BSAC and particular thanks for this goes to Lizzie Bird, who came over to the island on a number of occasions to train our new instructors. We have also been running a campaign to recruit more existing divers, and a number of new people have joined the club and been diving with us.
With our new instructors now fully trained, we are now keen to train more divers in the Islands. We are going to be running a try dive on the 15th of February at the Stornoway Sports Centre. If you would like to come along and try out Scuba Diving in the safety of the Swimming Pool, then please visit our website (http://www.lhsac.org) and register for the try dive.
We will be running an internationally recognised BSAC Ocean Diver course shortly afterwards; this will allow new divers to gain an open water diving qualification and start diving safely in the waters around the Islands, as well as further afield. More information about this is available on our website.
So, here’s looking forward to another year of exciting diving around the Western Isles!
