April is Autism Awareness Month

April is Autism Awareness Month and Autism Eileanan Siar is a local independent group who offer support and help to people affected by Autism locally.

They aim to create a collective voice regarding autism issues and to address any service gaps in the Western Isles, as well as reach out to connect with the local community and break down barriers.

The group meet on the second Monday of each month between 12 and 2pm in Newton Ward Community Association at Seaforth Road, Stornoway.

Autism is a lifelong developmental disability that affects how a person communicates with and relates to other people.

It also affects how they make sense of the world around them.

Some people with autism are able to live relatively independent lives, but others may have accompanying learning disabilities and need a lifetime of specialist support.

Asperger Syndrome is a form of autism.

People with Asperger Syndrome are often of average or above average intelligence. They have fewer problems with speech but may still have difficulties with understanding and processing language.

Spectrum Disorder is the term used to describe the conditions on the spectrum, this could be Asperger Syndrome, Autism and autistic spectrum conditions.
