Be better aware of heart failure signs with advice line

Malcolm Burr, Chief Executive of the Western Isles Council was just one of the people who took advantage of the chance of a free blood pressure check during European Heart Failure Awareness Day.

Chest Heart & Stroke Scotland (CHSS) and NHS Western Isles teamed up to visit the council offices of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

Blood pressure checks were offered from Debra Vickers, Lead Nurse in Cardiac Services, along with advice and information on spotting the signs of heart failure.

If you experience breathlessness, swollen ankles, a lack of energy, or any kind of chest discomfort, palpitations or tightness you should speak to your doctor. Symptoms may appear quickly over days or develop slowly over weeks or months.

Sonja MacLeod, CHSS Community Service Co-ordinator, who also hosted the stand, said: “It was great to be able to come out and speak to people about their health and through the blood pressure checks we were able to make several referrals to GP’s where high risk levels were discovered.”

“There is a lot you can do to manage and improve your heart’s health and CHSS offer a wealth of services and information for those affected by heart failure.

“CHSS has an advice line staffed by nurses who offer free advice and information on 0808 801 0899. Information on heart health and CHSS services is also available through the CHSS website at www.chss.org.uk
