Welcome back to all staff and pupils for the second term of this academic session.

As this busy term gets underway, I would like to mention the school’s success in the recent National Mòd.

Congratulations to all those involved in the different Mòd competitions, and to our music staff who work hard in ensuring the pupils are prepared.

RECORD AMOUNTS RAISED

The school is delighted to announce that the recent coffee morning raised almost £2,000 for the Bethesda Hospice.

The event was organised by S6 pupils, who would like to thank all pupils, parents and staff who donated baking and money to the event, and all those volunteers who helped on the day.

PARENTS’ EVENING

The next important date for parents is the S3 Parents’ Evening, which will take place from 4pm-6pm on this evening.

SHINTY SUCCESS

A historic moment occurred last month in the growth of shinty as a mainstream sport in the Western Isles.

Anna Macrae (S5) was selected to play for the under 18 Ladies’ North of Scotland team, against the South of Scotland team in Oban, following a trial match at Invergarry, Lochaber, where she represented the school and her club, Camanachd Leodhais.

Anna, who was playing in her usual defensive fullback role, helped her team to win convincingly 5-0.

She is only the second player from Lewis to represent the North of Scotland team in this annual fixture, and the first female player to do so. Is math a rinn i!

AUTHOR VISIT

D.S.Murray, who is a writer and was a former teacher in the school, recently led a writing workshop with an English Higher class.

He used items of clothing made from Harris Tweed as a stimulus for creating characters.

The pupils then developed these ideas into longer pieces of creative writing.

They appreciated getting tips and guidance from a professional writer, which will improve their own writing skills.

KNIT’N CHAT GROUP

The Knit n Chat group meets every Tuesday at lunchtime and last term, whilst chatting, they knitted squares.

These were then made into a blanket, which was raffled amongst the staff.

The amazing total of £220 was raised which will be donated to a local charity.

The blanket was won by Mrs Budge. The picture shows the pupils with the blanket.

FOOTBALL TRIUMPH

The S2 boys’ football team (pictured) recently beat Dingwall Academy in the Scottish Cup.

They showed good fighting spirit to comeback from 2-0 down to win 3-2.

The goal-scorers were Kenneth Mitchell, Sam Duncan and John Angus Morrison.
