Criomagan à Sgoil Mhicneacail - Nicolson Notes

The regular round up of news from Secondary School the Nicolson Institute in Stornoway.

BENVENGUDA!

A group of pupils from the Occitan-speaking area of France visited The Nicolson Institute recently.

The pupils, who are from the François-de-Belleforest de Samatan School near Toulouse, were visiting Sgoil an Taobh Siar as part of an educational exchange project.

They spent a morning at The Nicolson Institute, talking first with pupils in the Modern Languages department, who were delighted to meet some real French-speaking teenagers.

They then moved to the Gaelic department, where they heard a presentation about Gaelic-medium education before taking part in a shinty match and a ceilidh.

The photo above shows the class of French pupils, along with some of their Lewis hosts.

NORTH SCHOOLS’ TRACK AND FIELD CHAMPIONSHIPS

The Nicolson Athletics Team returned from a successful trip to the North Schools’ Track and Field Championships armed with an impressive four gold, seven silver and two bronze medals. The event was held at The Queens Park Athletics Stadium and the conditions were almost perfect for competing.

Performances of the day included Sian Macdonald taking the Gold in both her 100m and 200m sprints and Mary Macleod claiming first place in the Long Jump final.

Ellie Maclean also took the Gold in the 75m Hurdles. These were all well-deserved victories for the girls after months of hard training.

S6 LEAVERS’ CEREMONY

The now-traditional ceremony took place on Monday, 6 June in the Town Hall.

A packed audience of family and friends watched proudly as the S6 students were welcomed individually onto the platform by Depute Rector Mrs E Macdonald.

Details were given about each student’s future destination, and they also received a leaver’s certificate from their Guidance Teachers.

The audience heard speeches from the Rector, Dr F Murray, and School Captains Lewis Macdonald and Megan Davies, and the ceremony closed with a prayer from the Reverend Graeme Craig.

The platform party was piped in by Norman Campbell (S5) and left to the sounds of Rhys Macritchie (S3) on the trumpet.

Additional musical items were provided by Anna Macmillan, who sang her own composition about leaving school, and Gwion ap Rheinallt on saxophone. Callum Nicolson led the singing of Psalm 72.
