Getting ready for the South Harris Show

The opening procession at noon will be led by Harris Piping Club and the official opening will be made by Alison O’Neill – The Shepherdess, who spends a lot of time in Harris when not farming her flock of Rough fell sheep in Cumbria and managing her Harris Tweed and wool business.

Joyce Campbell of Armadale Farm, Sutherland, winner of the Thornton Scottish Sheep Farm of the Year 2015, will be judging the livestock with her husband, Ian MacLeay.

Birds of Prey will provide exciting falconry displays throughout the afternoon alongside Drakes of Hazard, Chainsaw Pete, Harris Highland Dancers and Bubbles the Clown.

There will also be sheep-shearing and a stock-judging competition, sports and heavy events, a children’s fancy dress competition, Aberdeen tractors, a pet show and agility course (for pets!), fairground rides and a bouncy castle.

There will be various stalls by local businesses, charities and community groups, local produce, teas, home baking, ice cream, seafood, burgers and plenty more.

Entries are invited for baking, jams, flowers and plants, fruit and veg, Harris Tweed, knitting and needlework, photography and art, children’s baking and crafts.

Harris sheep, cattle and poultry can also be entered. Entries must be submitted by 10am on show day at Leverburgh school.

The much sought-after South Harris Show trophies will presented at prize-giving, before the raffle and auction where you will have the chance to bid for Chainsaw Pete’s brilliant log carvings made on the day, amongst many other prizes.

The day will finish with the show dance at Leverburgh Hall where the hugely popular and local talent Iain Angus & Tosh will entertain, 10pm until late.

Over 16’s are invited, 16 and 17 year olds must be accompanied by a responsible adult aged 18 or over.
