Litter competition news goes down under

An article about the Children's Humorously Captioned Photographic Competition, published in the international Canadian-based magazine Green Teacher last spring, is to be re-printed in the Australian magazine Eingana, published by Environment Education Victoria.

Ann Palmer’s 3,000 word article, which includes photographs of the 2015 winning entries, was the one chosen from several articles submitted to Eingana for consideration by Green Teacher’s editor.

Recently Ann and her husband Peter, dressed as jesters, have gone into six Western Isles Schools, Sir E. Scott School in Tarbert, Pairc School at Gravir, Sgoil Nan Loch at Leurbost, Leverhulme Memorial School in Leverburgh, and Sgoil a Bhac.

They talked to over 300 children about their future role as pollution pioneers in the worsening global pollution problem.

In the Eastern Pacific Ocean, there is a garbage patch estimated to be eighteen times the size of Scotland, and that is only one of many.

According to official studies, it takes a million years for a glass bottle to decompose.

The slogan for this year’s children’s photographic competition is ‘Give the Earth a Christmas present. Pick up Litter!’

The competition organisers hope their attempts to change the image of litter-picking will contribute to a move from apathy to action.

The competition deadline has been extended to December 8th, and details of how to enter are on the website here.
