Looking ahead for Rotary and Interact Clubs

2016 is gearing up to be a busy year for the Rotary Club of Stornoway and The Nicolson Institute Interact Club.

And there was a fitting end in 2015 when the Interact Club was awarded the George Newhall Community Shield by the Stornoway Amenity Trust at the annual Christmas Lights switch-on event.

December also saw members of both Clubs help out with a Cancer Research bag-packing session; as well as assisting collect donations for the Eilean Siar Foodbank.

And The Rotary Club of Stornoway also launched its support for the Playlist for Life project, which was founded by Scottish broadcaster and writer Sally Magnusson and encourages families and caregivers to create a playlist of uniquely meaningful music for their loved ones suffering from dementia. Research shows that music can have a very positive effect, helping to stimulate memories.

December also saw the induction of two new members to the Rotary Club of Stornoway as Angus MacLennan, Depute Rector of The Nicolson Institute, and Hebridean Sea Salt founder Natalie Crayton were welcomed into the Club.

Moving to 2016 and the first major event for the Rotary Club of Stornoway is the annual Swimarathon at Lewis Sports Centre – and it’s hoped that many islanders will join to make it one of the best yet.

Monies raised will be split between local charities and the Rotary International’s three decade long fight to ‘End Polio Now’ – a programme which has seen a decrease of 99% in polio cases worldwide.

The 2016 Swimarathon starts at 5.45 for 6pm on February 6th, and for further details: see website

Later in February, The Nicolson Institute Interact Club are hosting a Soup and Pudding Lunch in Sandwick Hall on February 20th, in aid of The Gambia Partnership.

And on March 5th, in the Cabarfeidh Hotel, is The Rotary and Interact Club’s Hebridean Gala Dinner & Big Ceilidh. Starting at 7pm, the Black Tie event offers a sumptuous three-course buffet meal, as well as a host of local entertainment, to raise funds for MND Scotland, CRY and the RNLI charities.

MC for the evening will be Derek ‘Pluto’ Murray with music provided by Faram and guests. The Rotary Club’s popular Wheel of Fortune makes a return, with some fantastic prizes up for grabs; and main speaker for the evening will be MND Scotland’s Iain McWhirter. Tickets for the event are priced £37 per person or £296 for a table of eight.
