New CD of Gaelic Hymns

The CD –Seinneamaid Còmhla (Let’s Sing Praise Together) features songs from a Gaelic hymnbook the Church produced last year by members of the Kilmuir and Stenscholl parish in North Skye.

Rt Rev Angus Morrison welcomed the CD saying: “It is my definite pleasure to welcome this wonderful new CD of Gaelic hymns from the hymnbook compiled by Catriona Macdonald, Amy Cruicshank and Neilian Murray.

“We have here an immensely valuable contribution to worship in Gaelic, a resource that can be used in churches, schools and colleges—in fact everywhere Gaelic is heard.

“Gaelic speakers will enjoy listening to hymns old and new, and it will also help Gaelic learners to hear some familiar tunes sung in Gaelic. I commend it most warmly.”

Last year after their hymnbook was published, the Seinneamaid Còmhla group was invited to sing from the collection at events from Glasgow to the Uists.

Now, with the release of the CD, their singing will be available for everyone to hear, along with tracks from The Brogues, a talented group of young musicians based in Glasgow (see more about them at: website)

Seinneamaid Còmhla showcases a varied selection of the 100 hymns in the hymnbook, in a mix of solos, duets, band, group and congregational singings. Among the highlights are a new and fresh take on some old favourites, such as ‘Be thou my vision’ and ‘Take my life and let it be.’

Rev John Murray, minister for the Kilmuir and Stenscholl parish, says he is confident that local ventures such as this will keep the strong and distinctive use of the language in contemporary worship.

“It’s fantastic having these home grown resources,” Mr Murray said.

“The attractive hymnbook and this CD will also help those involved in chaplaincy in Gaelic medium schools throughout Scotland.

“It just shows the depth and strength of Gaelic here that projects such as these come right through from idea to fruition.”

The CD was funded in part by grants from the church’s Novum Trust and Bòrd na Gàidhlig.
