JUNIOR SCHOOL SPORTS CHAMPIONS

U14 BOYS’ FOOTBALL

The Nicolson Institute continues its football success story - congratulations to the Under 14 Boys who have secured victory in the North of Scotland Cup, beating Fraserburgh Academy 2-1 in the final.

CHESS CLUB DONATION

The Nicolson Institute Chess Club has just received over £1,000, a very generous donation from the Lewis Chess Club. The money will help to buy much-needed equipment, encourage more pupils to play chess, and contribute to the cost of competing in larger chess tournaments on the mainland.

Two trophies (see picture above) have now been allocated to the chess club, The Murdo Morrison Trophy for Club Champion, and The Calum Wallace Trophy for Most Improved Player, in memory of two men who contributed much to chess on the island.

The trophies will be presented at the Junior Prizegiving ceremony on Thursday, 23 June.

Murdo Morrison, a stalwart of the Lewis Chess Club, and Lewis native, was a great lover of the game.

He did his best to promote the game at every opportunity and right up until his health failed, he was always ready to help and advise players of all ages and abilities and pass on his knowledge of the game.

He was heavily involved in organising a large national tournament held in Stornoway to commemorate the temporary return of the Lewis Chessmen in 1995.

Calum Wallace was a very passionate advocate for the game of chess.

He was also a member of the Lewis Chess Club, where he became its champion in 1999.

Calum was not only involved in playing for his own personal pleasure. He was also very keen to pass on his love of the game to others, particularly the younger generation.

He taught chess at Lionel school, and also supported staff running The Nicolson Institute Chess Club.

He also wrote a chess article most weeks in this newspaper.

RUGBY TRIUMPH

The S1/S2 School of Rugby won its recent match against Fraserburgh Academy. The score was 77-42. The tries were scored by Benjamin Macdonald (4) Donnie Macdonald (3) Shaun Maclean (2), Rhys Macritchie (1), Saul Donaldson (1) Todd Morrison (11 conversions).

SPORTS’ DAY VICTORIES

The S1-S3 Sports’ Day was held last week.

Pupils dressed in the colours of their house (Addison – Purple, Macrae – Green, Gibson – Blue, Sutherland – Yellow, Forbes – Red) and were awarded house points based on their performance in different races and events.

For S1, the joint winners were Forbes and Sutherland, each with 289 points; for S2, the winning house was Addison with 313 points; and for S3 it was Addison again with 279 points.

The overall winner was Addison with 824 points. Congratulations to all pupils who competed and gave their best performances on the day.

LEAVERS’ CEREMONY

The S6 Leavers’ Ceremony will take place next Monday, 6 June, at 2.15pm in the Town Hall. Tickets (two tickets per student) are available in the school office. Parents are asked to be seated at the event by 2.10pm.
