Hide AdThe Nicolson Institute Chess Club has just received over £1,000, a very generous donation from the Lewis Chess Club. The money will help to buy much-needed equipment, encourage more pupils to play chess, and contribute to the cost of competing in larger chess tournaments on the mainland.
Two trophies (see picture above) have now been allocated to the chess club, The Murdo Morrison Trophy for Club Champion, and The Calum Wallace Trophy for Most Improved Player, in memory of two men who contributed much to chess on the island.
The trophies will be presented at the Junior Prizegiving ceremony on Thursday, 23 June.
Murdo Morrison, a stalwart of the Lewis Chess Club, and Lewis native, was a great lover of the game.

He was heavily involved in organising a large national tournament held in Stornoway to commemorate the temporary return of the Lewis Chessmen in 1995.
Calum Wallace was a very passionate advocate for the game of chess.
He was also a member of the Lewis Chess Club, where he became its champion in 1999.
