Nicolson Notes - European Language Day

All S2 pupils at The Nicolson Institute had the opportunity to celebrate European Day of Languages recently, when the Modern Languages Department invited Mrs L Cunningham, Europe Direct Information Centre Manager at the Comhairle, to talk to them about the importance of learning languages.

Each class participated in a quiz about Europe, testing their knowledge of different countries’ food, animals, flags and famous people.

They also had the chance to speak several European languages, including French, German, Greek, Polish and Spanish.

Every pupil was presented with a pack of information, including a map of Europe and their own ‘European Passport’.

BETHESDA HOSPICE FUNDRAISER

S6 students at The Nicolson Institute have expressed their wish to organise a Coffee Morning to raise funds for the Bethesda Hospice. This will take place on Friday, 7 October.

Pupils would be grateful for all donations of home-baking or shop-bought biscuits and cakes.

About 1,000 pupils and staff will attend during the morning, and we would be grateful for donations at the door (50p per pupil is suggested) to cover the cost of tea and coffee.

In addition, it is hoped to organise some stalls with various other fundraising activities, such as ‘Guess the sweeties in the jar’.

As well as raising funds for Bethesda, the event also benefits those S6 pupils who participate in its organisation, as they gain experience of team-work and event-planning.

YPI CHALLENGE 2016

The school recently held the Youth Philanthropic Initiative (YPI) Charities Conference for all S5 pupils.

Fifteen local charities were represented at the event, during which pupils found out about the work of each charity.

Pupils must now choose their own charity and prepare a presentation which will be delivered to a panel of judges in December.

The successful group will win £3000 from the John Wood Foundation.

This money will go to their charity who will, in turn, spend the funding locally.

Previous beneficiaries include CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) and the Samaritans.
