Special concert with Niteworks

Airing on BBC ALBA next Saturday, April 2nd at 11pm Obair Oidhche is an hour long showcase concert featuring the innovative electronica outfit Niteworks and support acts, Elephant Sessions and Inyal.

Presented by Vicky Kilgour and filmed before a live audience at QMU at Glasgow University, the concert on BBC ALBA captures Niteworks performing for their core audience; a young Gaelic-speaking fan base.

Already festival favourites and noted for landmark live shows, headliners Niteworks’ set is based on their critically acclaimed debut album, a recording which reflects their diverse influences; from electronic music to singer-songwriter Anais Mitchell to Sorley MacLean.

The concert was the musical culmination of Latha na Gàidhlig at Glasgow University, an annual celebration of Gaelic language and culture.

Event organiser, Gaelic language officer Fiona Dunn said: “We have excellent musicians, both in established bands and in new acts. It’s marvelous that increasing numbers of young musicians are forming groups that set out to pioneer Gaelic music in new genres such as dance music and electronica.”

Niteworks are renowned for collaborating with musicians and, for this concert, an illustrious cast of vocalists and musicians including, Catriona Watt, Alasdair Whyte, Donald MacDonald, Fiona Macaskill and top percussionist Andrew MacPherson augments their usual line up.

The programme openers are no less inventive and the first of two pioneering bands, Glasgow-based Inyal, are young Gaels who compose music through the prism of their various influences; Gaelic music, jazz and electronica.

Following an impressive recording debut, The Elephant Sessions were deserved winners of ‘Up & Coming Act’ at The MG ALBA Trad Awards 2014. The neo-trad quintet have received praise for their music and exhilarating live appearances.
