Green light for supermarket’s shopping system

Supermarket chain Aldi is introducing a new traffic light system to automatically control the number of customers entering its stores.

Communications director Richard Thornton said: “The protection and safety of our customers and employees is our top priority and this new system is an accurate and effective way to allow us to control customer numbers in stores.

“The system’s trial was well received by our customers and we will be gradually rolling this new social distancing measure out nationwide from this week.”

The traffic lights signal when customers can enter, based on customer limits designed to allow shoppers to observe two metre social distancing rules.

Most Popular

NHS and emergency workers will continue to have priority and will be encouraged to join the front of the queue while other customers are asked to respect this.

Stores will continue to employ their current measures, including protective screens at checkouts, distancing markers on shop floors, sanitation stations and signage advising people on how to safely do their shopping. The chain also recommends one shopper per trolley.
