Will the council provide a little festive cheer?

Free parking for up to two hours in Stornoway’s Perceval Square car park during the festive period could be introduced if councillors on Comhairle nan Eilean Siar back the proposal at next week’s meeting of the full council.

Under the scheme free parking could be available from 18 December to 5th January with the aim of supporting local businesses over the Christmas and New Year period.

During debate on the proposal at the council’s Transport and Infrastructure Committee, Councillor Charlie Nicolson (Steornabhagh A Deas) said that the idea had come from local businesses themselves.

But concerns were raised by Cllr Kenny John MacLeod (An Taobh Siar Agus Nis), who said that whilst he fully endorsed the aim of supporting local businesses, the measure might actually reduce the availability of car parking spaces if people parked and then failed to release spaces.

Cllr Nicolson said that while he agreed that a percentage might over-stay the scheme “was worth looking at as an option to support businesses in the town’.

Cllr Ranald Fraser (Sgir’ Uige Agus Ceann A Tuath Nan Loch), backing the proposal said that the “innovative suggestion” could give a boost to local shops.

The measure will now go to full council next Wednesday (9 Dec) for ratification.
