The latest series of Top Gear will see Paddy McGuinness, Chris Harris and Freddie Flintoff embark on a new automobile adventure.
But where is the iconic test track? Here’s all you need to know.
Where is the Top Gear test track?
The Top Gear test track is built on the main runway and taxiways of Dunsfold Aerodrome in Surrey. The track is designed to test cars to their limits and includes a number of corners including the Willson bend, Chicago, Hammerhead, Bentley Bend and the Gambon.
The layout of the track is approximately 1.75 miles long and was designed by Lotus Cars as a testing facility.
Can I drive on the Top Gear test track?
Track days used to be available where fans of the show could take part in driving with The Stig and Star in a Reasonably Priced Car. Under 17s off roading was also an option that was on offer. However, in 2016, TGXP, the firm which ran the track days, decided it could no longer do the event following the show’s decline in interest after Jeremy Clarkson’s exit in 2015.
According to The Sun, a statement from the firm explained: “Despite good reviews and early strong sales for the Top Gear Track Experience, there has been a sharp decline in ticket sales and interest since the changes in the television show.
“We deeply regret the position this puts our remaining customers in, have posted refund advice on our website and will be contacting all our customers directly in the coming days.”
A spokesperson for BBC Worldwide added: “We share the frustration of fans who’ve had their track day cancelled by TGXP.”
Sadly, it now doesn’t look like Top Gear fans will ever get the chance to have a go on the iconic track as it looks set to be demolished as part of a redevelopment. In December 2016, planning permission was granted to build 1,800 houses on the aerodrome site.
When does the new series start?
The new series kicks off on Sunday 16 June on BBC Two at 8pm. There will be five one-hour episodes in the series. In their first adventure together as the new presenters of Top Gear, the trio will visit Ethiopia before returning home and to the track to test the Ferrari 488 Pista and McLaren 600LT .
McGuinness, Flintoff and Harris will then be seen attempting to build their own battery-powered sports car on a budget. The second episode will also see the appearance of Danny Boyle and Himesh Patel.
Comedian McGuinness recently shared his thoughts about what the fans will think of the new series.
“If you think back to the Top Gear of old, people loved it, and they still will in my eyes. Everyone talks about the trips they did. The car was there, and they were reviewing it, but above all they were just on an adventure.
“People can forget that – they can get too bogged down in the techy side of things. In the end, it’s about going to different places. It’s not as full on laddy as you might think. It’s light and shade.”
“I just want to be part of something where people will be sitting there on a Sunday night with their family and friends enjoying it, having a laugh and maybe picking up a few hints and tips along the way,” he added.
