At Wednesday’s meeting of the Full Council, Convenor Cllr Norman A MacDonald said: “Angus has been chairman of the committee since 2017, and on behalf of the Comhairle I would like to pay tribute to all Mr McCormack has done and continues to do for education in the Western Isles.”

Cllr McCormack said: “When the Director of Education [Bernard Chisholm] advised me some time ago of his decision to retire, I decided that I should go too.

“I have enjoyed working with Mr Chisholm and together we have achieved significant success.

“Education is a challenging brief but we leave our schools in good heart and achieving great things and our Children’s Services [are] caring successfully with children who have difficulties.

“We know that 97 per-cent of our leavers are where they wanted to be. ESgoil is now a key national initiative and Modern Apprenticeships a new route to success.”

Cllr McCormack concluded: “I will miss the challenge, the conversations and the friendship.”
