Maritime disaster exhibition

A mobile exhibition, which draws on a little-known disaster at sea near Rockall, will be unveiled in An Lanntair next month.

Danish passenger vessel SS Norge was on her way to New York in 1904 with 795 on board when she hit the rocks. The lifeboats could only carry 251.

It was, at the time, the worst ever civilian maritime disaster in the Atlantic Ocean and is second only to the Titanic, which happened just eight years later. Some of the survivors of SS Norge were treated at the Lewis Hospital. Eight children and one adult who died in the disaster are buried at Lower Sandwick

The exhibition is organised by the Western Isles Lottery.
