Covid-19 outbreak in Uist is spreading with 38 positive cases now identified

The number of positive cases of Covid-19 associated with the outbreak in Uist has risen to 38.

Last night, NHS Western Isles chief executive Gordon Jamieson revealed there had been three further positive cases identified yesterday (Sunday, October 4).

It follows four cases being identified on Friday, although there were no new cases relating to the Uist cluster, or elsewhere in the Western Isle, on Saturday.

Mr Jamieson added: “I can also confirm that we now have positive cases as far north as Benbecula.”

He urged everyone to continue their efforts to suppress and contain the virus – maintain physical distancing, keep up hand and respiratory hygiene, wear face masks and face coverings, and don’t car share outwith families.

Mr Jamieson said: “If we continue with these efforts, then we have the best chance of containment and suppression of the virus, and the best chance of preventing further illness.”

The most common symptoms of COVID-19 are:

• A high temperature (37.8C of greater)

• And/or a new and continuous cough

• And/or a loss or change in your sense of smell and/or taste.
