A resounding success was achieved by an island dance school at an international dance competition earlier this month.
Pupils from the Lorna Laird School of Irish Dancing – established in Benbecula two years ago – took home a total of nine cups and 78 medals when they attended the World Irish Dance Association European competition, held in Swindon on June 8th.
Known locally as the Island Dance Crew, or IDC, Lorna and her dancers represented the Western Isles in the competition, which saw over 350 entrants from not only Scotland, but Spain, Russia, Germany, Ireland, England and the Isle of Man dancing in three classes, Beginner, Primary and Intermediate.
It was the first major competition that the School had attended since being set up and the success is evident with this level of results never before seen by an Irish Dance School in the North of Scotland.
The winning dancers were: Pearse McKay, Carly McKay, Paige Menzies, Marina Popova, Gemma Kilgour, Donella McLeod, Mairi-Ann McInnes, Laurita Ivanova, Kayleigh McGrattan, Lucy-Ann McLeod, Catherine McCormack, Catriona Ferguson and Michelle McMillan.
The school was able to attend the competition with support from QinetiQ, Kallin Shellfish, MacInnes Bros, The Dark Island Hotel, UCVO, Stewart Menzies, Uist Celtic Supporters Club and Creaggory Co-op who allowed the IDC to carry out bag packs.
