Lewisman Jock Murray will launch his book The Whaler of Scotland Yard at the Baltic Bookshop at 12.30pm today (Monday).
The book is published by Birlinn with the story of Jock Murray’s life so far. Starting in Lewis and then travelling round the world with the Merchant Navy and into a senior role at the Metropolitan Police just as armed gangs like the Krays, the Great Train Robbers and criminals like Charlie ‘Chopper’ Knight ruled the London crime scene.
Now retired, Jock shows now signs of slowing down though. A larger than life character in the islands he’s courted controversy by selling alcohol on the Sabbath as the former owner of The Whaler’s Rest, whilst raising large sums of money for charity with a ‘nude’ calendar.
