Housekeeper Mrs White is to be replaced by Dr Orchid, who has a PhD in plant toxicology and was home-schooled by Mrs White herself.

The game sees players deduce which of the characters has committed a murder at Tudor Mansion. They also have to figure out the weapon used, and in which room the crime occurred.

It is the first time Hasbro has killed off a Cluedo character since 1949 when Waddingtons licensed the game to Parkers in the USA and the six suspects known to recent generations of players were introduced.

The new Dr Orchid character- the adopted daughter of Tudor Mansion owner Samuel Black - is said to have been expelled from a private Swiss school “following a near-fatal daffodil poisoning incident”.

Hasbro‘s marketing director Craig Wilkins said: “It was a difficult decision to say goodbye to Mrs White, but after 70 years of suspicious activity we decided that one of the characters had to go.

“Dr Orchid is a brilliant new character with a rich backstory and links to the Black fortune.”

Four of the other characters - Miss Scarlett, Professor Plum, Mrs Peacock and the Reverend Green - have all been revamped recently. The Professor has even been cast as a video game designer - with only Colonel Mustard remaining untouched by modernity.
