FOR Mairi MacRitchie, baking is one of life’s great pleasures – both when it comes to making it and eating it.
And in BBC ALBA’s new baking series ‘Fuine’, North Uist lass Mairi, travels the Highlands seeking out talented home-bakers who share with her some of their favourite recipes.
In the first programme passionate bakers share their favourite fruit loaf recipes, a much loved and comforting home baking delight.
Mairi also makes her way to Barra where the island’s annual ‘Produce Show’ is taking place and meets Mary Anne Ferguson in her travels who is busy preparing cold-tea loaves to enter into the competition.
School-cook Flora Campbell shows Mairi how to make a delicious gingerbread following a recipe that’s been in Flora’s family for some time; and in North Uist, Joan MacDonald makes a fruit loaf that’s a great way to use up some of the surplus courgettes grown in her garden.
Back in her own kitchen, Mairi bakes some of her own favourite fruit loaves, using recipes that are simple but delicious and that anyone can bake at home.
Fuine/Home Baking has been produced by Caledonia TV for BBC ALBA and can be seen each Friday from 22nd March at 8.30pm.
