Explore the wonders of Isles’ wildlife

It wants to prise people from their armchairs and to discover the world of water bugs, water plants and water birds at the Loch Stiapabhat Local Nature Reserve (LNR) in Ness.

Curracag will be holding a Biological Recording Activity Day on Saturday 15th October at Loch Stiapabhat.

The outdoor activities will allow you to discover first hand about the insects, wetland plants and birds found on the LNR.

There will be helpers on hand to show you how to survey for various species and to help identify and record what you find.

By taking part and contributing to the new Outer Hebrides Biological Recording Project you will play a vital role in safeguarding our natural environment.

The activity day is part of a five-month campaign called Action Earth organised by CSV (Community Service Volunteers).

As part of this year’s campaign Scottish Natural Heritage will be supporting 155 projects in Scotland through the three different grant awards, aimed at groups that will help support and encourage Scottish biodiversity and encourage volunteers through practical environmental projects.

The Outer Hebrides Biological Recording Project is led by Curracag and part-funded by Leader Innse Gall and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

Anne MacLellan, the Comhairle’s Biodiversity Officer, who is helping to co-ordinate the event with Curracag members, wants to see as many people as possible come along on the day.

“Everybody can get involved in conserving biodiversity. It is a shared resource and a shared responsibility.

“From the smallest individual action to a national campaign, every contribution helps!

“It is hoped that the day will encourage people to get involved in recording local wildlife as unless we know what we have we don’t know what we might loose.”

The event is free of charge and refreshments will be served. All you need is your wellies and waterproofs!
