Hebrides are ‘Islands of Inspiration’ on Trust cruise

THE National Trust for Scotland will this week pay tribute to the legacy of art, music and literature inspired by the Hebrides by including Hebridean ports as four out of six destinations on their ‘Islands of Inspiration’ cruise.

The cruise, which sets sail from Leith on June 30th will call at St Kilda, Skye, Staffa and Canna in a seven-day trip that aims to explore landscapes which have acted as a muse for artists, from composer Felix Mendelssohn to filmmaker Michael Powell.

The National Trust for Scotland’s Cruise Director, Elaine Bruges, said: ‘The Hebrides have such strong cultural associations for artists, both local and international.

“We are especially excited to be visiting three of the Trust’s properties, St Kilda, Canna and Staffa, all of which have inspired important and lasting works of art throughout the years.”

    Poet Kenneth Steven will travel on-board the cruise, and is hoping to inspire passengers to pen their own odes to the isles in an onboard poetry competition.

    And proving that the Scottish isles have been a favourite of landscape photographers since the earliest days of the camera, Victorian magic lantern expert Mark Butterworth will share some of his rare 19th century slides of St Kilda in a series of lectures on photography of the Western Isles.
