Stornoway will be the next venue to host Proiseact nan Ealan’s hit fashion show Na Mo Chuid Aodaich as the Gaelic Arts Agency team up with The Nicolson Institute to mark the end of an era for the secondary school.
Na Mo Chuid Aodaich began in Lewis in 2009 before continuing with highly successful shows in both Glasgow and the Isle of Skye.
The project is a celebration of the clothes and history of local communities which incorporates a catwalk show, drama and music.
PNE is teaming up with The Nicolson Institute in the delivery of the show – on June 22nd – as a celebration of the past 100 years of the school and the vital part it has played in the history of the island.
The forthcoming closure of the old school buildings and the relocation to the modern building currently being constructed on Sandwick Road has given all a chance to look back over the years on the pupils who once attended the school.
This Gaelic showcase will highlight the rich variety of fashions that donned the streets of Stornoway down through the ages, together with celebrating the achievements of the many ‘stars’ that left The Nicolson Institute and made their mark, across the world, in a huge variety of careers.
PNE is appealing for loaned contributions of vintage clothing for the project. These clothes, often lying forgotten in the homes of the local community, will be the stars of the show.
The stories behind each garment will be told as the clothes, modelled by local people, are given a breath of life on the catwalk.
The response from each community where the show has already taken place has unearthed some beautiful and unique articles of clothing from the previous century to the present day. And the wide variety of clothes submitted shows the truly vibrant styles that have been employed by islanders throughout the iconic fashion movements of the 20th century.
All the money raised by donations to this project will be going to Crossroads Care, a charity which provides respite care for carers in local communities and with whom PNE will be working in support of this project.
So far Na Mo Chuid Aodaich has raised over £20,000 over all the areas in which it has taken place.
Anyone who is interested in providing any articles of clothing should contact PNE on 01851 704493.
