Karina takes a gold

Karina Murray from Sand Street, Stornoway attended the Palace of Holyroodhouse on July 4th to receive her Gold Duke of Edinburgh Award.

She was presented with the award by Commodore Charles Stevenson, Naval Regional Commander for Scotland and Northern Ireland in the presence of His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.

Karina was part of the local Duke of Edinburgh West Side Group and to achieve her Gold Award she undertook service with Active8, sport in the form of Swimming and running and did her skill helping in the Attic Hair Studio.

She took part in a three day expedition from Harris to Uig and the Residential, which was most memorable, was a trip to Moldova with Kenny Smith, Donna Smith and Janet Murray accompanied by Charlie Nicolson.

Karina found participating in the Duke of Edinburgh Award challenging and rewarding and would recommend it to other young people.

The Award is available to all young people irrespective of ability, gender or background and encourages participants to undertake exciting, constructive, challenging and enjoyable activities in their free time.
