Katie Morag takes to the silver screen

Filming locations have not yet been decided but it is hoped Katie Morag will pay a visit to the Western Isles during the filming of a 26 part live action drama for Cbeebies.

Set to be broadcast towards the end of 2013 on the BBC Children’s channel, the series will see Katie Morag take to the silver screens for the first time.

The much loved character created by author and illustrator Mairi Hedderwick lives with her family on the magical Island of Struay and with her little brother, busy shopkeeper parents, her best friend and her grandmothers.

Commenting on Katie’s next adventure Mairi Hedderwick said: “It is high time that I let go of Katie Morag. I will be intrigued to watch her transformation into the medium of live action television because Katie Morag is a very real child in a very real environment; the mailbags of teachers’ and children’s letters from all over reassure me on this.”

The series will be produced by the Scottish indie Move On Up for the BBC and although exact destinations for filming have yet to be confirmed it will be shot in the North of Scotland.

CBeebies Controller Kay Benbow said: “I can think of no better home for Katie Morag than CBeebies. We’re really looking forward to bringing Mairi Hedderwick’s wonderful books to life for the first time.

“Katie’s exciting adventures will be enjoyed by children right across the UK, all set against the rugged beauty of the Hebridean Islands.”
