Aignish lights up red for Remembrance

A memorial cairn in the Outer Hebrides (the Aignish Land Raid monument in the Isle of Lewis) has been lit up red in a mark of Remembrance to all those affected by war or conflict by the local community energy group Point and Sandwick Trust, who operate Beinn Ghrideag wind farm on the land that the crofters fought for, and who use the feature as their logo.

The award-winning monument located on the Braighe isthmus which connects Point and Sandwick represents the confrontation between the local crofters and their families with the armed marines from the military along with police officers sent to stop them taking direct action.

This was following number of crofter-led raids of the landed gentry and their estates across the Highlands and Islands. This ‘uprising’ led eventually to Gladstone’s 1886 Crofting Act and which gave crofters, among other things, security of tenure and which still regulates crofter-landlord relations to this day.
