Young pipers win prizes

THE piping season for juniors began in earnest last Saturday (February 25th) in Glasgow with the National Piping Centre’s annual Junior Championship Competition.

Among the main winners was young Brighde Chaimbeul (13) – daughter of writer Aonghas Phadraig Caimbeul, originally from South Uist – who took first place in the Under15 Piobaireachd, second in the March and second in the Strathspey and Reel.

This meant that for the second year running, Brighde was the overall Junior Champion champion.

Brighde is pictured (in green) along with some of the other prize winners, including Sandy Cameron from Roy Bridge, who is taught by Iain MacFadyen of Kyle, and the Under18 Piobaireachd winner, Charles MacDonald of Inverness, whose family also have strong Uist connections.
