100 boilers to keep islanders cosy

A MILESTONE was reached in ensuring islanders keep warm as Stornoway-based company Point 1, working in partnership with Western Isles housing authority Tighean Innse Gall’s Taigh Blath initiative, recently installed their 100th boiler through the Scottish Government Energy Assistance Package (EAP).

The EAP is delivered through Scottish Gas which has been working closely with local contractors. And the installs carried out by the Taigh Blath and Point 1 partnership have been praised by both customers and Scottish Gas for the quality of work, timely install of the systems and the aftercare service.

This was certainly the case of the installation of Newmarket resident Alex Murdo Campbell’s new boiler – the 100th since the Package began.

“I’m as warm as a bee in a honeycomb now,” said Mr Campbell, aged 84. “I think it’s prefect, a really wonderful scheme and it’s great to have local guys working on it.

“I couldn’t get over it,” he added: “The boys who installed it were really fantastic and so fast and any questions I had they answered straight away so I knew what they were doing. They also told me that the new boiler is about 20 to 30per cent more efficient, so I’m looking forward to saving a bit of money on my bills as well.”

The Scottish Government Energy Assistance Package is designed to improve the energy efficiency of qualifying clients homes. This is delivered through: installation of a new central heating system; a new boiler; draught proofing; cavity wall insulation; loft insulation; room thermostats and heating controls, and the insulation of tanks and pipes.

Commenting on the scheme whilst enjoying the warmth and cosiness of Mr Campbell’s house, Western Isles MSP Alasdair Allan said: “It’s great to see the difference new central heating makes to someone’s life.

“To have all the work done by people locally is also something that clearly people appreciate – not only the aspect of local employment but it means there also somewhere locally for people to go and get advice.

“I look forward to even more installations under the Scottish Government Energy Assistance Package and congratulate Mr Campbell on being the 100th resident to benefit from this scheme.”
