Na h-Eileanan an Iar SNP MSP, Alasdair Allan, has welcomed NHS Western Isles willingness to produce a costed feasibility study for a new hospital building on Barra.
Dr Allan met with Health Board Chief Executive, Gordon Jamieson, about this subject recently and has encouraged both the health board and the Comhairle to ensure a costed plan is in place as soon as possible.
Alasdair Allan commented: “Everyone is agreed that the lifespan of the existing St Brendan’s hospital is limited and that a new hospital on the island is now needed. With NHS Western Isles now set to produce a costed feasibility study, I hope that another milestone has been reached in this project.
“As the Health Board and Comhairle share the current building, with the Comhairle providing residential care in their part of it, there is a clear need for the two bodies to cooperate on any future building, something which I know they both appreciate.
“My understanding is that the Comhairle will be considering whether to commit to the feasibility study at a meeting soon and I hope that agreement then will allow us to move forward and start considering the practical issues of how, rather than whether, a new hospital and care home should be built on Barra.”
