The Ullapool Dance Festival proved a great success – with a number of Western Isles dancers hopping across The Minch to take part.
The newly formed Lanntair Youth Dance Group (a group of young girls aged 10 to 13), performed a Jazz number at the Friday Night Showcase last weekend - and were met with an incredible reception and lots of terrific feedback from organisers and audiences.
The young islanders also took part in a full day of dance activities on the Festival Saturday, including Creative Dance, Ballet, Musical Theatre, Hip Hop, Flash Mobs and finishing with a Disco.
Festival organiser Becky Thompson said: “The An Lanntair Dance Company had the whole theatre cheering and clapping in delight following their spectacular performance.
“A number of people commented on what a pleasure it was to see every dancer smiling whilst effortlessly performing complex moves and exciting choreography.”
As well as the youth group, a number of adults active in the local dance scene attended the Festival including an Lanntair’s adult ballet teacher (and keen step dancer) Claire Whyman and an Lanntair’s Salsa teacher Trish Botten, who was there to pick up some tips in Rumba and Cuban Salsa at the festival.
The two Western Isle Dance Development Officers – Laura Johnston and Kirstie Anderson – also attended taking full advantage of the opportunity to try some different classes and see some terrific work being performed.
Trish Botten commented: “I wanted to try some new dance forms and get a chance to refresh my skills on the dances I love.
“There was something for everyone. The tutors were professional dancers but so welcoming as all the classes were very mixed age wise and experience. I was dancing in my head all the way back to Stornoway on the ferry!”
