All Wright in the end as Matthew nets late winner

It was all Wright in the end as the Nicolson S2 boys team strode into the last 16 of the Scottish Cup.

Extra-time and penalties looked certain as the Nicolson and visiting Hazlehead had slugged it out during a hugely entertaining 2-2 draw.

But with extra-time looming large and less than 30 seconds to play on ref David Macleod’s rolex, Niccy kid goals Matthew Wright popped up with impressive timing to slam home his second of the game to tip the scales in the Stornoway side’s direction with a dramatic late winner.

The goal prompted wild celebrations from the Nicolson lads who knew time was very much on their side to avenge a defeat in the same competition last year against an efficient and technically impressive Hazlehead outfit.

It had been the Aberdeen schoolboys who took the lead through a 20-yard banana shot which arced into the top corner midway through the first half.

But the Nicolson reclaimed control of the match in a whirlwind 60-second spell.

Full-back Calum Maclennan was left completely unmarked inside the six-yard box to power a header home for 1-1.

Then inside 45-seconds they were in front when Wright cocked his leg and lashed an unstoppable left foot thunderbolt inside the far post from outside the area.

Hazlehead levelled early in a very even second-half before Wright rose to the occasion to win it in style.
