Stornoway arts centre An Lanntair’s latest commission is Am Beairt (Gaelic for ‘The Loom’), and has been commissioned from Glasgow-based Russian artists Sharmanka.
A key part of the Creative Place award winning project Bealach, it will open to the public at An Lanntair from the 1st of October.
It also features a photo essay on the project and on the Harris Tweed mills by Robin Mitchell.
The exhibition will close the Harris Tweed Festival which has been running throughout the summer at An Lanntair and has been a key event as part of the Year of Innovation Architecture and Design.
As a metaphor for this ‘remodelling’ and repositioning, Am Beairt will be a commissioned piece of kinetic art created by the former Russian company Sharmanka who will reinvent and reconfigure a genuine Harris Tweed Hattersley loom into a new machine that tells the narrative of the Industry.
Powered by – and created from a loom – told and embellished through the unique vocabulary and vision of Eduard Bersudsky.
