A bakery can now bid to supply food to the elderly across Scotland following its acceptance into a national initiative offering access to over £3 million of business.
MacLean’s bakery in Benbecula was awarded a place on the Scotland Excel framework, a non-profit organisation whose aim is to deliver council procurement on at a national level.
MacLean’s is one of only four businesses on the Excel scheme, each of whom can bid to supply food across Scotland.
Securing a place on this lucrative contract means that MacLean’s, alongside three other firms, has the opportunity to supply food to the 19 councils that have signed up to take part. Scotland Excel’s national frameworks make it easier for councils to source goods and services through a single agreement, rather than place individual contracts.
Bids will include nutritionally balanced and affordable meals, delivered hot or frozen, for lunch clubs, meals on wheels services and direct to service users homes to nineteen of Scotland’s local authorities.
Allan MacLean, managing director at the bakery, said:
“As a small business on the Western Isles, securing this place is a great success for us and represents a great opportunity for our business and the local economy to benefit from being part of a Scotland wide contract.”
His brother Ewen, fellow director, said: “We hope that our success inspires other businesses here on the Western Isles to see the opportunities available from bidding for public sector contracts.”
MacLean’s were encouraged to bid for the tender by officials at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.
Convenor Norman Macdonald, councillor and member of Scotland Excel’s joint committee, said: “It is encouraging to see a company from the Western Isles taking advantage of the opportunities offered by public procurement at a national level.
“I hope it will inspire others to consider bidding for public sector tenders to win new business that could boost our local economy.”
Julie Welsh, director of Scotland Excel, said: “MacLean’s successful bid to supply to our community meals framework is further proof that company size and location shouldn’t be barriers to participating in national contracts.”
