Barra calls for air service shake up

Barra islanders enraged at the threat to their air service from Council cut backs have called on the Scottish Government to take over the island’s air links.

In a letter sent to Holyrood by the Isle of Barra Transportation Committee on behalf of the 1200-strong community, Scottish Finance Minister, John Swinney and new Scottish Transport Minister, Keith Brown are asked to consider directly providing the air service rather than fund the links via Comhairle nan Eilean Siar.

According to the Isle of Barra Transportation Committee, the Comhairle by withdrawing the service would be using Public Service Order funding for purposes other than was originally intended.

The letter also says the Comhairle failed to evaluate the additional cost implications or the impact on health services.
