Recently some of the country’s best-known chefs, food writers and broadcasters met for the 16th annual BBC Food and Farming Awards.
The awards recognise members of the food industry, including farmers, shopkeepers, cooks and street food vendors who are changing Britain for the better through good food. One of the food stores shortlisted for an award was MacLennans Supermarket in Benbecula, which was nominated by its customers for the Radio 4 ‘You and Yours’ Best Food Retailer award.
MacLennans saw off competition from over 800 others nominated for the award to make the final three, but was beaten to the top spot by The Bells Inn in Almeley.
The family-run MacLennans store has been at its current site since 1902 and is a third generation business.
MacLennans tries to make good food more accessible to residents of the Isle and sources as much local produce as possible from local suppliers, holding numerous strong trading relationships with local businesses and incorporating a large range of locally sourced products.
