Trading standard officers at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar are warning B & B operators and businesses in the Western Isles of advertising scams.
Officers have been notified by B&B operators that they have been cold called by a man claiming that he is chasing up payment for advertising in a business directory. Checks have shown that the caller is not from a genuine business.
Trading standards have also received complaints from businesses that have had bogus invoices or cold calls demanding payments in excess of £200. The scam claims that recipients are in debt as a result of a previous agreement to advertise their business on marketing wall charts and calendars.
The Comhairle is advising businesses and B & B operators to be alert to these scams and not to give out debit or credit card details over the phone to cold callers.
