A Lewis woman was presented with the British Empire Medal for her work with Lewis and Harris Breast Cancer Group (LHBCSG).

Mary Ann Macleod of Goathill Road, Stornoway was presented with Medal by Western Isles Lord Lieutenant, Sandy Matheson. The award, which was announced in The Queen’s New Year Honours list is for Mary’s work with the Breast Cancer Group which she founded 18 years ago and she has been Convenor of the Group since then. Mary set up LHBCSG because she had been diagnosed and treated for Cancer whilst living in England and had been helped by a local Breast Cancer Support Group. When she returned to live in Lewis, she realised that a support group was needed. Mary was also heavily involved in starting The Hebridean Men’s Cancer Group.
