The Post Office is proposing to relocate Bayhead Post Office to two new locations where they will open as a modern open-plan local-style branches with extended opening hours.
Post Office local is a new concept for delivering Post Office services and the new branches in Stornoway will offer Post Office products and services throughout shop opening hours from open-plan tills at the shop counters instead of from separate screened counters.
The proposed new locations for the renamed Post Office branches are:
Cearns Post Office, Cearns Community shop, Cearn Shulasgeir, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, HS1 2YN.
Newton Post Office, Campbells Service Station, Cannery Road, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, HS1 2SF.
The Cearns Community Shop is 0.8 of a mile and Campbells Service Station is 1 mile from the current Bayhead Post Office at Matheson Road, Stornoway, Isle of Lewis, HS1 2LB.
The Post Office is now inviting customers and interested parties to give their comments on the move in a six-week public consultation.
Should the move go ahead, the Cearns branch would open from 9am – 9pm Monday to Saturday offering an extra 26 hours of Post Office service every week.
The Newton branch would open 7am – 11pm offering an extra 50 hours of Post Office service every week.
The two branches would offer a total of an extra 76 hours of Post Office service a week, giving customers more choice of times to visit.
The proposed move, in agreement with the current postmaster, who wishes to leave the network, is part of major modernisation programme across the Post Office network designed to make it easier for customers to do business, through longer opening hours and modern open plan environments.
Kenny Lamont, Network Operations Manager said: “We are making it easier for customers to get their cash, send and collect their mail and do their banking because we know how important these services are to local residents.
He added: “We are confident that these vibrant new-style Post Offices at the heart of the local community will meet customer needs.
“This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office and will secure services for the future.”
During the public consultation, Post Office Ltd welcomes feedback on any issues customers would like considered before a final decision is taken on this proposal.
The consultation will close on 23 December 2016.
