Call for new ferries on the west coast

The Chairman of Comhairle nan Eilean Siar's Transportation and Infrastructure Committee has called on Transport Scotland to build two new ferries to improve capacity on west coast routes.

The call comes following a meeting with Minister for Energy, Connectivity and the Islands, Paul Wheelhouse, this week.

Chair Uisdean Robertson said: “This was a good meeting and I believe the Government and its officials are genuinely trying to find a solution to what is clearly an under capacity in Cal-Mac’s fleet.

“However there is a problem in that no suitable ferries can be found despite extensive efforts to do so over a number of years.

“I am therefore calling on Transport Scotland to commission two new, appropriately sized, ferries to increase the resources available and to ease some of the issues our communities have had to endure over the summer months.”
