Carloway residents have voted to go ahead with a buyout of the Estate.

A community ballot was held, organised by Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, and last night’s count revealed that 74 per cent are in favour of a buyout.

The electorate included 16 and 17 year olds living in the estate.

Chair of the Steering Group Kenny John Maclennan said: “Following the result of the community buyout ballot on the 24th February, the steering group whose remit was to gauge the desire for a buyout, have now been given a strong mandate for the community buyout of Carloway Estate. The ballot returned a resounding Yes vote of 75% in favour of a community buyout which amounted to 254 votes for and only 86 votes against the buyout.

“Work will now continue to submit funding applications to the Scottish Land Fund, Highlands & Islands Enterprise and the Comhairle’s Community Capital Grant Fund, also applying for charitable status and registration of Carloway Estate Trust as a company.

“We are greatly encouraged by the number of young people who have shown interest in the entire process, and it is also very important that everyone puts their support behind the collective community effort of the estate which will be of benefit to all who live on Carloway Estate.”
